Abstract
Trials are reported on the use of laser ultrasonic (LUS) measurements to examine the microstructural condition of steel strip in connection with hot rolling in full scale industrial production at SSAB's plant in Borlänge, Sweden. The LUS equipment was located at the end of the run-out table immediately before the downcoiler. A brief description of the method is presented, together with results from these preliminary trials. Despite the difficult environment in the steelworks, good ultrasonic signals were obtained and these could be rationalised according to the expected wave types. Analyses of the velocities of different waves demonstrated that the phase constitution of the steel (austenite to ferrite transformation state) could be determined from these measurements on the moving strip.
