Abstract

This paper describes the design and development of a model for integrating global networking into the research and educational activities of an academic discipline. 'Comserve' is an electronic information and conference centre, accessible through global computer networks, that serves faculty and students in human communication studies. In 1991 Comserve was formalised as a service of the Communication Institute for Online Scholarship, Inc, a non profit organisation that exists to facilitate the use of computer and information technologies in the service of communication scholarship and education worldwide. While the organisation is also involved in developing applications for desktop computers for use by scholars and students, Comserve remains the principal focus of CIOS activities.
