Abstract

This note examines one-sided (from above) nonlinear approximation with respect to a general integral (mean) “norm” on an interval. Necessary conditions for local minima are given. Interpolating properties of best approximations are given. When degenerate approximations can be best is studied for the L1 and L2k cases. Some comparable aspects of the discrete case are examined.
