Abstract
Small-plaque (SP) and large-plaque (LP) variants of chicken-embryo-lethal-orphan (CELO) virus, an avian adenovirus, were tumorigenic in newborn hamsters inoculated either subcutaneously (sc) or intraperitoneally (ip). Tumors were induced at the site of sc inoculation. With the ip route, tumors were induced in the peritoneal cavity and liver. No significant difference was observed either in the latent period of induction or in tumor incidence between the two virus variants. The neoplasms induced in subcutaneous areas and in the peritoneal cavity were classified histologically as anaplastic sarcomas; the liver tumors were bile-duct carcinomas. The sera From the SP and LP tumor-bearing hamsters contained CELO-specific T antibodies.
