Abstract

Lorraine Dong provides a comprehensive catalog of Chinese American children's folk literature, identifying an important distinction between children's stories based on Chinese legends and specifically Chinese American literature written for children. By focusing on Chinese American folklore for children, Dong makes the claims that such stories speak to a distinct Chinese American community. In turn, Dong looks into the origins of these stories, leading to questions about what is authentic about Chinese folklore retold for Chinese American and American audiences.
