Abstract

AbstractResults from numerical simulations of separating and reattaching turbulent boundary layer flow over a backwardfacing step are analysed with respect to the time‐dependent flow behaviour. Beside the well‐known roll‐up of the separated shear‐layer (“Kelvin‐Helmholtz instability”) and the ejection of subsequently formed large‐scale structures (denoted as “shedding”), another unsteady phenomenon which is commonly called “flapping” can be observed. Additionally, the effects of open‐loop passive and active flow control methods are investigated.
