Abstract

A study has been made of various factors (nature of the media, gegenions, etc.) influencing the viscosity of dilute chitosan solutions. A determining factor in the behaviour of these solutions is the ionic strength of the medium. It is proposed that reductions in the intrinsic viscosity of chitosan solutions with time are due to the formation of intrachain hydrogen bonds.
