Abstract
A ‘Virtual Instrument’-based approach of realizing an adaptive PID controller is presented. The principle of the virtual instruments (VIs) - based upon the hardware and software basis provided by National Instruments - proved to be an effective and convenient tool to realize multiple parallel operating adaptive PID controllers. An effective, numerically robust adaptive PID algorithm has been realized, which observes the process, estimates the parameters of a second order model with dead-time, and redesigns the PID controller corresponding to the model. The VI approach of realization results in a set of building blocks which can easily be integrated to a control system corresponding to the user demands.
