Abstract

The use of third electrodes for charging a secondary zinc-air battery is described. Performance data for single cells and for the battery are presented. The characteristics of the battery are: open-circuit voltage, 21·1 V; maximum power, 366 W at 38 A and 9·6 V; energy density, 23 W-hr/lb and 1350 W-hr/ft 3; peak density, 15 W/lb and 880 W/ft 3. Some of the problems encountered in the operation of the battery are discussed.
