Abstract

When excited vibrational states are encountered, the rotational states are dependent upon the vibrational states. When excited electronic states are encountered, the vibrational states, in turn, become dependent upon the electronic states, thereby also coupling the rotational states to the electronic states. When the coupled partition function for electronic, vibrational states is required, the dissociation energy of the molecule provides a menas for setting an upper limit on the energy states which are permissible. Three maximum summation indices, for electronic, vibrational and rotational states, are presented both in tabular form and by equations for each type of energy.
