Abstract

This study has the purpose of bringing to light flexibility modelling issues in connection with multibody dynamic simulation. Towards this end, an examination is made of fundamental concerns that arise when one seeks to formulate equations of motion for simulation of dynamics and control of large flexible structures. Quantitative criteria are provided regarding modal discretization and model reduction techniques. In particular, the thermo-structural modelling and interaction effects on the system modal spectrum are investigated using system modes. This approach allows a more accurate modelling of the thermal–structural interaction in large flexible space structures.
