Abstract

Experimental and numerical investigations of brittle fracture are of great relevance for many engineering materials. However, numerical methods derived from classical continuum mechanics often encounter difficulties for discontinuities and cracks for unknown paths. Therefore, we employ the theory of peridynamics to study brittle fracture in ultra-high performance concrete. Specifically, we describe the capabilities of peridynamics for the numerical simulation of a dynamic Brazilian test. As a result, a simple bond-based peridynamic formulation implemented in an in-house code compares well to our experimental investigations.
