Abstract

Lu3Al5O12 (LuAG) is a widely applied host for scintillators, laser gain media, and luminescent materials. This work concerns the photoluminescence (PL) of Gd3+ doped LuAG upon VUV excitation and its dependence on temperature. It also relates to the time dependent PL and thus the determination of the decay constants. It turned out, that LuAG:Gd3+ is a very efficient UV-B emitting phosphor and that the emission spectrum is a sensitive function of temperature. Consequently, this material can be applied as UV-B emitter in VUV radiation sources and as an optical temperature sensor for devices or processes, where VUV radiation is applied as the excitation source.
