Abstract

Polycyanaminoamides have been prepared by polycondensation of 2,5-dicyanoterephthaloyl chloride with tetraaminopyridine and tetraaminodiphenyl ether. The polymers were then transformed into polyaminoiminoimides by thermal cyclization. It is shown that heat treatment of the latter at 350–400° leads to the formation of polybenzimidazopyrrolones. These findings were verified by the synthesis of model compounds and an analysis of their cycloconversions.
