Abstract
We study the spin liquid phase of the Heisenberg model in two dimensions using variational wavefunctions with gauge fields in finite size clusters. The energy as a function of the gauge fields and polarization is calculated. We show using a variational procedure that holes added to the system behave as anyons. The holes distort the gauge fields in its surroundings giving rise to quasiparticles obeying fractional statistics.
