Abstract

A frequently observed feature in gear carburizing is the formation on the part surface of a shallow layer showing traces of grain boundary oxidation. This layer and that immediately underlying it often do not transform completely to martensite upon quenching, do not attain full hardness, and adversely affect the fatique behavior of the gear.
