Abstract

Rudyard Kipling poetically envisioned the road to Mandalay in British Burma as a place where Flying Fishes Play and the Dawn comes up like Thunder outer China 'crost the Bay! Under the present military rule, the road to Mandalay has become a place where hordes of economic dragons-traders and merchants-have been coming down like thunder from Burma's giant neighbor, China. Since 1988, Chinese traders, engineers, and trucks loaded with Chinese goods and modern arms have been traveling on the famous Burma Road that runs across the Shan state of northern Burma to the ancient Golden City of Mandalay. This study analyzes and evaluates the socioeconomic impact of China's free access to Burma and is based mostly on Burmese sources.
