Abstract

The schedules of call production by males of two species of Ranidella were investigated to establish the dependence of these schedules on time (viz., daily and seasonal rates) and weather (e.g., temperature, wind strength). These schedules and estimates of the elevation of metabolic rate during calling were used to evaluate the daily metabolic burden of call production. The annual reproductive effort of males was deduced by using these estimates and information on the durations of breeding behaviour of individual males in choruses.
