Abstract

The structure of random beds packed with spheres or irregular shaped particles are characterized theoretically and experimentally by means of statistical methods. A relation for the mean hydraulic radius is derived for a random bed of spheres. A method is proposed for the practical determination of the coordination number in a bed of spheres. The hypothesis that the packing can be considered as a 2 component mixture, namely: solids and voids, is extended theoretically and proved experimentally.
