Abstract

This paper reviews shortly the present state of the theory concerning the spontaneous pair creation in strong electric fields. Overcriticality of an external field and a spontaneous pair creation are defined within the framework of an external field approximation of QED. Open theoretical problems are reported. Application of the theoretical model to a collision of two heavy nuclei (U92) is discussed. The aim of the work is to provide a conclusive model, which applied to (future) experimental results will prove (or disprove) the existence of overcriticality.
