Abstract

This chapter presents the behavior of a set of particles in the tank, with respect to their suspension, sedimentation, and exit under similar flow conditions but different modes of release into the flow. The methods of release described in the chapter can be classified into two groups: (1) the release of a possibly random number of particles occurs either at fixed moments of time, or continuously at a given rate of release over a fixed period of time and (2) a certain, possibly random, number of particles is released at random times or over a given period of time at a random rate of release. The following conditions are assumed in the chapter: (1) all particles have identical transport characteristics (2) the effect of interaction is negligible, and (3) the hydraulic conditions are stationary.
