Abstract

Adler has proposed a test of the partially conserved axialcurrent (PCAC) hypothesis in high-energy forward inelastic neutrino reactions by relating the cross-section to a corresponding pion cross-section. The extension of Adler's result to the forward region is discussed and the relevant neutrino-nucleus cross-section is calculated using Bell's optical model for virtual pions. TheA-dependence is found to be close to that of cross-sections for real pions. It is however pointed out that the formulation of PCAC in nuclear matter is ambiguous. A modified PCAC which gives neutrino cross-sections proportional toA also in the forward direction is found to be more reasonable and is also favoured by the CERN HLBC data. The detailed form of PCAC will also have consequences for other weak processes in nuclei.
