Abstract
A kinetic study has been made of the degradation of isotactic PP (115°, cumyl peroxide initiator) using dialkyldithiocarbamates of Ni, Zn, Pb, Cu and Bi as inhibitors. The kinetics of degradation were analysed by the viscometric method. The rate of degradation is a linear function of the peroxide radical concentration. By terminating the PE chains the carbamates inhibit degradation; the inhibiting action has been assessed on a quantitative basis. By comparing the inhibiting action of the carbamates on oxidation (based on O 2 absorption) and on degradation (based on changes in MW) it is shown that the carbamates have only a relatively slight effect as degradation inhibitors for PP. Degradation processes are not inhibited by the carbamates in the absence of oxygen.
