Abstract
This chapter examines one particular term, khrin , from the legal lexicon as it appears in numerous OT sources, and consider its employment in ritual settings as well. The two examples from the pillar edicts both involve royal grants awarded to the lineage of a prominent Tibetan minister. Having established the normative use of khrin as 'legal punishment' or 'judicial punishment' within Tibet's legal lexicon, it is now necessary to consider the term's a-normative uses, along with a-normative uses of khrims . In the Old Tibetan ritual lexicon, the khrin is both an 'ornament', made of gold or silver, that may be wrapped around a sheep's horns, and an instrument capable of killing a horse.
