Abstract

Abstract When piston rings suffer starved lubrication, the gas pressure at the leading and trailing edge is not negligible, especially near the fire top dead centers (FTDCs). The load will be supported by a mixture of hydrodynamic lubrication, asperity contact and gas pressure. In this study, the oil-gas-solid mixed bearing characteristics and tribological properties of the top ring under starved lubrication are analyzed. It is found that the high boundary pressure has a significant effect and it can even compare with hydrodynamic lubrication and asperity contact near FTDCs. Besides, the influence of different textures is also investigated. It is found that textures are not always positive for improving the tribological performance of the piston ring-cylinder liner (PRCL) system.
