Abstract The neutrino cooling rate of 'neutron' stars composed predominantly of a quark phase in their interiors has been computed and it is found that the temperature dependence and rate are about the same as for neutron matter near nuclear densities, though the specific heat for the quark matter is somewhat higher. The resulting cooling relation between surface temperature and time is compared with recent X-ray observations of young supernova remnants, two of which (the Crab and Gum nebulae) are known to contain collapsed objects.
