Abstract
The thermodynamics and kinetics of the homogeneous nucleation of gas bubbles in liquids is rederived. The nucleation rate is found to be essentially independent of solute species. The nucleation rate expression is evaluated for common gases dissolved in blood. This rate is found to be greater than 1 cm -3 sec -1 only when the initial (pre-decompression) partial pressure of the solute gas exceeds 1900 atm. It is concluded that the medical condition of dysbarism is not due to homogeneous nucleation of gas bubbles in the blood.
