Abstract

Peculiarities of the isothermal gas oxidation of a X18H10T type steel alloy in a temperature range corresponding to the slight brake in the oxidation rate curves in the Arrhenius frame of axes were investigated with use of the computerized digital optical video microprobe and photo-emf method. The digital optical images of the surface inhomogeneous oxide layers are obtained with the aid of the microscope. These images allow revealing the morphology and distribution of the thickness of a inhomogeneous layer over the specimen surface i.e., statistical properties of the thickness topogram of the oxide layer at any microarea of the metal surface. Jointly with the photo-emf measurements, characterizing the conductivity type of the oxide layer over the same microareas, the obtained data show that the brake considered is due to the formation, at a temperature of 500–520°C, of metastable nuclei of wüstite, which forms a stable layer only at a temperature higher than 570°C.
