Abstract

The human operator in the control room of a complicated process plant plays a crucial role influencing the safety, availability and economy of the plant. An understanding of human behaviour and limitations is therefore essential both for the assessment of the plant safety and for the design of an optimal man-machine interface. In the paper different models of the human operator and their applicability to process supervision are discussed.A qualitative framework for operator models of a complicated process such as a nuclear power plant is discussed in more detail. The implications of the model in the control room design, the design process itself and the training of operators are indicated. Finally some general needs for new research are discussed
