Abstract
The metal-insulator transition in boron carbide occurs at the composition B 12C 3; the electrical conductivity, the thermoelectric power, the Hall effect and the resonance frequency of a high energy optical phonon change abruptly at this composition. The transition is assumed to occur within a split band induced by the electronic states of the carbon atoms in a level at about 0.17 eV above the valence band edge or above the mobility edge of the valence band.
