Abstract

The cutting tests on carbon steels, alloy steels and aluminum were carried out with ceramic, cermet and carbide tools. From the results, the types of failure on the flank and face of tools were observed and the applicability of ceramic tools to various Kinds of work materials was discussed. The results are as follows : (1) The kinds of failure of ceramic tools when machining steels are essentially the same as those of carbide tools. The rectangular type of wear on the flank of ceramic tools is generally observed. (2) It may be concluded that the ceramic tool shows good cutting characteristics for high carbon steel and free cutting steel, in comparison with carbide and cermet tools.
