Abstract

The cutting tests on quenched and normalized chromium-molybdenum steel, carbon steel and cast iron were carried out with ceramic and carbide tools, and the applicability of ceramic tools to various kinds of work materials was examined. The latest ceramic tools have high wear resistance at high temperature and the ductility has been considerably improved than ever, so the life of ceramic tools has got longer than that of carbide tools in machining every work material in this experiment. But in machining the work material with high flow stress, chipping wear easily occurs on the relief face, which suggests the necessity of improvement in ductility of ceramic tools. Therefore it may be given as a conclusion that the lower becomes the flow stress of work material and the more the ductility of ceramic tools is improved, the better cutting characteristics than carbide tools ceramic tools show.
