Abstract

Abstract Characteristic foF2 variations during preparation of the asthenospheric Hindukush earthquake of 12 September 1983 are investigated. Stable effects in F2 layer critical frequency variations are revealed which can be considered as earthquake precursors. The existence of stable enhancement of foF2 night values 1.5–2 days before an earthquake shock is demonstrated, as well as a steep decrease of foF2 evening values 1 day before the earthquake. These phenomena are regionally restricted.
