Parrish, A. ; Pankonin, V. Abstract Results are reported for decimetric wavelength recombination-line (166-, 221-, and 248-alpha) observations of W49 and W51 which were made with the Arecibo and NRAO telescopes. Data from previous recombination-line programs are discussed, and the brightness temperatures of the present lines are calculated. The brightness temperatures are found to increase sharply with wavelength, which requires that the upper levels of the recombining atoms be overpopulated with respect to conditions of local thermodynamic equilibrium. It is suggested that the line emission at these decimetric wavelengths is stimulated by a background source of continuum radiation, most likely the H II region in the line of sight.
