Abstract
As an example of the axis-symmetric bending problem of a thin plate under membrane force and lateral load, a circular plate supported freely and subjected to uniform radial traction at its boundary and bent by uniform lateral load was considered. In the present paper, usual foundamental equations of elastic bending problems were changed so that they contained a parameter showing the appearance of plastic range in the plate and solved by using the electronic computer. From these results, in the plates having various ratios h/b of their thickness 2h and diameter 2b, relations of the uniform radial traction at their boundary and the uniform lateral load producing the plastic range could be estimated for the first time. It was also shown that, although simple usual analytic treatment would be applicable to the value of h/b greater than a certain amount from the consideration that the condition Tr=Tθ=const. approximately holds in the plate, but in other cases, considerable error could be contained in the results by such a simple treatment.
