Abstract

The author injected the aqueous solutions of potassium acetate of various concentrations, each 0.5 cc per Kg, in rabbits and obtained systematically their effect on the blood pressure and pulse over a long period. Intravenous injection of 4.9 % solution caused immediately an average decrease of 15 mm Hg (10.7 %) in the maximal blood pressure and an average of 8 mm Hg (11.5 %) in the minimal blood pressure. These changes were restored to normal value after the average lapse of 16 minutes. By intravenous injection of 9.8 % solution, the maximal blood pressure fell on the average by 22 mm Hg(11.5 %) and the minimal blood pressure fell on the average by 13 mm Hg (16.6%), immediately after the injection, thereafter both these rapidly recovered to the normal value. The pulse curve amplitude generally decreased immediately after the injection. By intravenous injection of 13% solution, the maximal blood pressure was decreased on the average by 38 mm Hg (27.1 %) and the minimal blood pressure was decreased on the average 19 mm Hg (25.5 %), immediately after the injection, and within 5 minutes they were restored to the original value. Thereafter the maximal blood pressure showed a slight increase and then decreased gradually. No marked change was obtained in the pulse curve amplitude and an average decrease of 27 (11.2 %) was obtained in the pulse rate immediately after the injection. The changes which were caused by subcutaneous injection of 16.3 % solution were rather dilatory. The maximal blood pressure showed an average decrease of 16 mm Hg (11.3 %), the maximal decrease, immediately or in 5 minutes after the injection and then increased gradually. The minimal blood pressure changed almost simultaneously with the maximal and the maximal decrease was on the average 10 mm Hg(12.5 %). Usually 20 minutes after the injection, an average decrease of 3.7 mm (31.2 %) was caused in the pulse curve amplitude and this was the largest decrease. The pulse rate generally showed no recognizable change.
