Abstract

The inner sphere structure of Tb 3+ complexes in tri- n-butyl phosphate (TBP) solvent extraction system is studied by the new technique of cooperative vibronic (CV) spectroscopy. The results show that the inner solvation spheres of the majority of ions are dehydrated in the organic phase even when the concentration of water in the organic phase is high, with only about 10% of the Tb 3+ ions hydrated by one water molecule. This water molecule is displaced with increasing HNO 3 concentration but not with addition of KNO 3.
