Abstract

The data of Graham and Bartlett, Karn and Austin have been analyzed in terms of luminous energy rather than luminance. Based upon the forms of the resulting curves the hypothesis that the energy requirements are determined by aberrations is advanced. Within the limits of the Bunsen-Roscoe law the retinal energy density is a constant and beyond this critical duration the retinal illuminance is a constant. Some further uses of these relations are indicated.
