Abstract

The formation of α-Al2O3 platelets by a bio-templating route using eggshell membranes is investigated. A facile solution soakage method was employed for the synthesis of Al2O3. X-ray diffraction results indicated the Al2O3 phase transformations occurring with the calcination temperature. The growth of α-Al2O3 platelets were carefully studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopes. The biomacromolecules and functional groups present on the eggshell membrane bio-template played a crucial role in the formation of α-Al2O3 platelets. A plausible growth mechanism based on the oriented attachment growth process involving the role of eggshell membrane has been proposed. This study paves the insight for the development of α-Al2O3 anisotropic structures through bio-templated approach.
