Abstract

It is proposed that changes in the dependence of the maximum Newtonian viscosity of polymer melts on molecular weight accompanying the attainment of a critical molecular weight M critare due to structural changes in the melt owing to transition of the macromolecules from an extended to a folded conformation. Empirical equations were derived for the relationship between M crit and polymer chain parameters.
