Abstract
We present a model for the (1 × 2)-(1 × 1) phase transition occurring on the (110) faces of Pt and Au, suggesting that the phase transition does not imply a large mass transfer, The (1 × 1) LEED pattern simply arises from disorder in the top layer of the missing row structure. The model, which belongs to the 2D Ising universality class, also explains the transition induced by adsorbates. such as CO/Pt(110).
