Abstract

The size structure and density of an exploited and an unexploited population of Nereis virens Sars were studied for a year. The number of worms is related to the number of bait-diggers on a monthly basis. From estimates of the population size structure, density, the ‘diggers’ selectivity, efficiency and effort the monthly average fishing mortality is estimated. It is concluded that the spawning stock of the exploited population is not threatened by the present level of exploitation.
