Abstract

From surveys in 1976 with the 75 cm diameter Lowestoft high-speed plankton sampler, the distributions of the six planktonic stages of Cancer pagurus off the north-east coast of England are presented. Major hatching areas and times together with larval drifts are described and compared with previous knowledge of the behaviour of the adults. Data on development rate of the first fours, obtained experimentally, are presented and used to calculate seasonal production and mortality. The estimate of seasonal production of 7.23·10 12 stage I zoea has been used to calculate a mature stock size of 5200 tonnes.
