Abstract

An approximate equation of state, previously derived on the basis of information theory, is applied to a classical system of non-interacting hard spheres, and the results are compared with those from the cell and tunnel models. By a slight modification of the original statistical argument, it is shown that the cell and tunnel model equations of state are obtained as particular cases. With either approach, at low densities PV/NT is obtained as a power series in V-1/3 instead of the correct form in powers of V-1, indicating in this region a break-down in the statistical approximations.
