Abstract

The energy broadening of the primary electron beam in a low pressure discharge was measured using a spherical and a cylindrical probe. The two probes deliver quite different results, the difference being due to the anisotropy of the broadening process. By comparing the distribution functions as obtained by the two probes it is possible to obtain the one dimensional distribution function of the beam electrons.
