Abstract

The effects of antenna sectorization on the reverse link capacity of cellular CDMA systems is studied. Traditionally, the effects of ideal antenna sectorization have been considered as a multiplication factor of the same value as the number of sectors introduced. Our contribution is to study the effect of real antenna patterns on the capacity of CDMA cellular systems. First, the other cell interference is evaluated analytically for different path loss exponents and standard deviation of the lognormal shadowing losses. Soft handoff and softer handoff were considered. Then, the effect of this corrected factor on the capacity of the system is studied. It is shown that, for a three sectored antenna system, the gain in capacity in comparison to an omnidirectional antenna system is 2.39 for real antenna patterns and typical propagation parameters.
