Abstract

Assuming that the scattering amplitude in the forward direction is pure imaginary and the distribution of transverse momenta of the scattered particles is independent of incident energy, a simple relation between the elastic cross section, the total cross section, and average transverse momenta that is valid at all high energies is obtained. This relation is in agreement with results on p-p and pi -p scattering. The differential scattering cross section, obtained on the basis of these assumptions, shows an initial shrinkage of the diffraction peak with energy up to a few Bev, but with further increase of energy the rate of shrinkage drops, and finally the width of the diffraction peak becomes independent of energy.
