Abstract

Equipment for the observation of the oscillating component of the macroscopic magnetisation Mz (LODESR) is described. It basically consists of an oscillator which utilises an IMPATT diode as an active device. The frequency determining cavity of the oscillator coincides with the sample cavity. The two RF fields perpendicular to the static field H0, which are necessary for the observation of the phenomenon have been obtained by 100% amplitude modulation of the bias current of the oscillator. Using an IMPATT diode model NEC-NDST11W a power of 1 W on each of the two sidebands has been obtained. With minor modifications the equipment can be used for performing the usual ESR spectroscopy. By a comparison between the ESR and the LODESR signals a direct measurement of the relaxation time T1 is obtained. The oscillator cavity permits the insertion of the usual variable temperature accessories.
