Abstract

The right optic nerve ofDanio rerio (Ham.) was severed without disturbing the regular course of the blood. The outer sheath of nerve was, however, only punctured so as to make the accurate approximation and to help and guide the regenerating nerve fibres before the lens and the retinal elements had time to degenerate. Return of vision was restored in twenty-four out of ninety fishes operated upon. The tests for the restoration of the vision, viz., dropping of food particles and the optokinetic reactions with the eye movements were carried out. Histological check-ups at different stages of regeneration were performed and the picture thus obtained of the regenerating nerve fibres has been discussed at a great length.
