Abstract

Summary A series of experiments was conducted on high pressure vessels made of stainless steel PH15-5 in order to determine the critical pressures for catastrophic failure under 0.5″ projectile impact. Three different ageing heat treatments were examined resulting in different values for this critical pressure. Fracture mechanics based analysis is used to explain the results for the brittle specimens while simple elasto-plastic considerations apply for the more ductile ones. These simple, analytical treatments, together with some test shots to determine the size of cracks and holes, account for the measured critical pressures for both brittle and ductile failures..
